The role of wildlife in the epidemiology of mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis in domestic ruminants in Europe (PARA-TB TRANSMISSION)

Obiettivo

Recently non-ruminant wildlife species have been shown to harbour and excreteM.a.paratuberculosis (paraTB), a disease, which causes significant losses in domestic ruminants across Europe. The European wildlife host range and their role in the epidemiology of paraTB in domestic ruminants are unknown. The objectives of this proposal are 1. Identify the wildlife species that harbour paraTB across Europe 2. Identify potential routes of paraTB transmission from wildlife to domestic ruminants 3. Identify management tools to control paraTB in domestic ruminants. Field ecology and bacteriology techniques will be combined to parameterise and develop epidemiological models of paraTB in domestic and wild hosts. The models will be used to identify high-risk routes of transmission that may be targeted in disease control strategies and system specific farm and disease management practices that best control paraTB in farmed ruminants.
