Obiettivo
Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are priority soil pollutants in Europe. Due to their poor bio availability, they persist in many contaminated sites although they are principally biodegradable. Bacteria of the genera Mycobacterium and Sphingomonas are particularly suited for PAH degradation because of their peculiar metabolic and physicochemical characteristics and might represent the main environmental sink of these chemicals. This project, conceived by seven academic partners and three bioremediation firms, aims at exploiting these organisms in bioremediation. In laboratory and small-scale experiments, it will identify the optimal conditions for PAH removal by these organisms, develop tools that allow activity monitoring in soil and sludge matrices, stimulate the bio availability promoting and metabolic capacities in situ and recomment full-scale technologies that maximise their performance.
