A new class of platinum complexes of the type P2Pt(CF3)X has been synthesised and characterised. These compounds have the ability to increase the nucleophilic character of hydrogen peroxide and other organic peroxides. They have been tested as catalysts for oxygen transfer reactions from the above oxidants toward a variety of organic substrates: olefins, ketones, aromatic compounds. They are normally reactive toward electrophilic molecules that are not easily accessible through more conventional catalysts (Ti, Mo, W etc) and in most cases display high selectivity in oxygen transfer under very mild experimental conditions. The classes of compounds obtained are: epoxides, methylketones, phenols, lactones and some of these can be obtained enantioselectively under appropriate modification of the catalysts.
