The central problem which has been studied is the distortion of a flame front by the turbulent motion of the gas through which it propagates, and the effect of this interaction on the rate of burning . The practical motivation was to find the rate of turbulent combustion in terms of the characteristics of the turbulence and the physicochemical characteristics of the reactive gas mixture.
The problem has been attacked at a fundamental level, combining experimental, theoretical and direct numerical simulation approaches.
Key results have been obtained in the following areas:
geometry of turbulence and flame fronts;
innovative computing for reacting flows;
nonlinear and chaotic processes in turbulent flow.
