THE ROLE OF LIGHT HYDROCARBON GASES IN MINERAL EXPLORATION WITHIN THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO LEAD AND ZINC MINERALISATION IN CARBONATE HOST ROCKS.

TO DEVELOP HYDROCARBON GAS GEOCHEMISTRY AS MINERAL EXPLORATION TECHNIQUE, ESPECIALLY IN THE REALM OF LEAD/ZINC MINERALISATION.

THIS PROJECT, TO BE CARRIED OUT JOINTLY BY IMPERIAL COLLEGE, LONDON, UK AND MERCURY ANALYTICAL LTD., LIMERICK, IRELAND, IS PRIMARILY CONCERNED WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF A RELATIVELY SIMPLE TECHNIQUE FOR THE EXPLORATION FOR LEAD/ZINC MINERALISATION.
WORK CARRIED OUT BY THE CONTRACTORS SUGGESTS THAT THERE ARE LIGHT HYDROCARBON GAS ANOMALIES ASSOCIATED WITH LEAD/ZINC OREBODIES ON THE UK MAINLAND AND IN IRELAND. THERE IS GOOD REASON TO BELIVE THAT THESE ANOMALIES ARE DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE PROMARY MINERALISATION OF THE ASSOCIATED ROCKS AND THE PROJECT WILL BE PRINCIPALLY CONCERNED WITH LOOKING AT OTHER KNOWN DEPOSITS, WITH A VIEW TO ESTABLISHING THE PRESENCE OR ABSENCE OF SIMILAR PHENOMENA, THUS DEMONSTRATING THE USEFULNESS OR OTHERWISE OF THE METHOD AS A PRIMARY EXPLORATION TECHNIQUE.

ALTHOUGH HYDROCARBON GAS ANALYSIS IN RELATIVELY WEEEELL ADVANCED, THE TECHNIQUES OF EXTRACTION OF THE GASES FROM ROCKS IS LESS WELL DEVELOPED. THEREFORE, PART OF THE PROJECT WILL BE CONCERNED WITH AN INVESTIGATION OF THE TECHNIQUES FOR THE EXTRACTION OF LIGHT HYDROCARBON GASES FROM ROCK AND THEIR TRANSFER TO THE ANALYTICAL EQUIPMENT. THIS WILL BE DONE BEARING IN MIND THAT SAMPLE COLLECTIONS. WORK IS ALREADY IN HAND TO INVESTIGATE THE WAY IN WICH HYDROCARBON GASES ARE HELD IN THE ROCKS. THIS RESEARCH WILL BE CONTINUED AS PART OF THE PROJECT.

IT IS ALSO KNOWN THAT GAS ANOMALIES TAKE DIFFERENT FORMS AND THESE ARE LIKELY TO BE RELATED TO THE MECHANISM OF DEPOSITION OF THE MINERALS. IT IS THEREFORE INTENDED TO INVESTIGATE THE MECHANISM OF TRANSPORTATION OF METALS AND OTHER ASSOCIATED MATERIALS TO, AND WITHIN, THE VARIOUS ORE BODIES WHICH THE PROJECT PLANS TO INVESTIGATE. SIMPLE COMPUTER MODELS WILL ALSO BE DEVELOPED TO STUDY THESE MOVEMENTS IN ORDER TO PREDICT THEIR OUTCOME, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE LIGHT HYDROCARBON GASES.

FINALLY, SOME RESEARCH WILL BE DIRECTED TOWARD FINDING THE MOST SUITABLE METHODS FOR INTERPRETING AND DISPLAYING THE DATA. PARTICULAR ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO DEVISING STATISTICALLY VALID SAMPLING PROGRAMMES.
