Cel

TO ASSESS THE BIOGEOCHEMICAL CYCLE OF NITROGEN IN FOREST ECOSYSTEMS AND ITS IMPORTANCE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION IN CONNECTION WITH ACID DEPOSITION.

THE RESEARCH PROGRAMME IS INTENDED TO SHOW THE COMBINED EFFECTS OF ACID RAIN INCLUDING ACID INTERCEPTION BY FOREST CANOPIES AND OF SOIL INTERNAL ACIDIFICATION PULSES, WHICH ARE DEPENDENT ON CLIMATIC FLUCTUATIONS, ON THE VITALITY OF THE FINE ROOTS AND, FINALLY ON THE STABILITY OF THE FOREST ECOSYSTEM. ECOSYSTEM INTERNAL PROTON PRODUCTION IS LARGELY INFLUENCED BY THE NITROGEN CYCLE AND THE RATIO OF NH4/NO3 DURING MINERALISATION AND ION UPTAKE. ON THE OTHER SIDE NITROGEN CYCLE ITSELF IS IMPACTED BY THE DEPOSITION OF AIR POLLUTANTS. THEREFORE, TO UNDERSTAND THE COMPLEX MECHANISMS INFLUENCING ECOSYSTEM INTERNAL PROTON PRODUCTION FURTHER INFORMATION ABOUT THE NITROGEN CYCLE IS NECESSARY AND IS EXPECTED TO BE OBTAINED FROM THE CURRENT PROGRAMME.
