WEIGHT REDUCTION OF VEHICLE SUB-ASSEMBLIES USING THIN WALLED ADHESIVELY BONDED STEEL COMPOSITE STRUCTURES.

Cel



IN RECENT YEARS A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF WORK HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT UNDER ECSC AEGIS TO SEEK EFFECTIVE MEANS OF REDUCING THE WEIGHT OF VEHICLE STRUCTURES PRIMARILY THROUGH THE USE OF CERTAIN HIGH STRENGTH STEELS. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT EXAMPLE IS WORK CARRIED OUT BY PORSCHE AND THE GERMAN STEEL INDUSTRY. THESE RESEARCHES HAVE, HOWEVER, INVOLVED THE CONCEPT OF SUBSTITUTING INCREASED STRENGTH TO COMPENSATE FOR A REDUCTION IN SHEET THICKNESS, FOR EXAMPLE, BODY PANELS OF THICKNESS DOWN TO 0.6-0.7 MM AND STRUCTURAL MEMBERS DOWN TO 1.2 MM.

THIS RESEARCH PROJECT SEEKS TO EXPLORE THE POSSIBILITY OF ENHANCED WEIGHT REDUCTION BY REDUCING THE THICKNESS MUCH MORE SIGNIFICANTLY THAN IN EARLIER RESEARCHES, E.G. BODY PANELS DOWN TO 0.3 MM AND COMPENSATING FOR THIS SIGNIFICANT THICKNESS REDUCTION BY INCLUDING DELIBERATE GEOMETRIC CHANGES IN THE PLANE OF THE SHEET TO ENHANCE THE STRUCTURAL MODULI OF SUBASSEMBLIES.
THESE COMPOSITE-QUILTED MATERIALS WILL BE USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH ADHESIVE AND WELD BONDING TECHNIQUES TO ENHANCE FURTHER THE STIFFNESS CHARACTERISTICS. RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN NEW ADHESIVES AND PRODUCTION METHODS WILL BE EXPLOITED IN THE PROPOSED WORK. BONDING TECHNOLOGY IS NOW OFFERING ADDITIONAL POTENTIAL ADVANTAGES, IN MILD STEEL CONSTRUCTION, OF A MORE UNIFORM LOAD DISTRIBUTION AND ENHANCED FATIGUE PROPERTIES IN STRUCTURAL MEMBERS OF VEHICLES. IN ADDITION, BY SUITABLE DESIGN, DENT RESISTANCE CAN ALSO BE IMPROVED TO ENABLE THE USE OF THIS "QUILTED" CONCEPT FOR OUTER PANELS.
THE WORK WILL BE CARRIED OUT JOINTLY BY BRITISH STEEL CORPORATION, WELSH LABORATORY AND BRITISH LEYLAND TECHNOLOGY LTD.
