Co-ordination, Implementation and Operation of Multimedia Services

Cel

By the specification and implementation of services, the benefits and possibilities of advanced multimedia communication technology are demonstrated and brought forward to specialists and the general public. To show that :

- Multimedia tele-services can run over different qualities but unique functionality.
- A great deal of multimedia tele-service functionality can be implemented independent of broadband networks, in workstations and personal computers.
- Broadband communication can take into consideration the widespread existence of communication-unaware application programs running on existing workstations and personal computers.
The main objective of the research was to specify 2 advanced multimedia teleservices and implement them as prototypes on various end systems. These end systems, installed in selected integrated broadband communications (IBC) islands, are integrated as selected advanced communication experiments. The teleservices have to be tested, demonstrated and exploited on the basis of a common communication platform which is itself specified and implemented in a heterogeneous network and end system environment. The technical approach was to specify and implement the 2 advanced multimedia teleservice multimedia mail (MMMS) and the joint viewing and teleoperation service (JVTOS) as prototypes on various end systems.

Key issues in the research are:
the implementation and operation of the 2 teleservices;
the implementation of a common communication platform;
the support of a heterogeneous network and end system environment;
collaboration with advanced communications experiments (ACE) concerning the usage of teleservices.

The research has resulted in the following:
an agreement on a common structure for the coordination, implementation and operation of multimedia services (CIO) test beds and its description;
a requirements analysis and resulting functional specification of the teleservices MMMS and JVTOS;
agreements on the CIO protocol stack to be implemented in CIO test beds;
first agreements on common data structures and interchange formats.
Technical Approach

Two advanced Multimedia tele-services - (Electronic) Multimedia Mail Service MMMS and a Joint Viewing and Tele-Operation Service JVTOS - are specified and implemented on workstations (Sun SPARC, Siemens-SGI, NeXT) and personal computers (MS-Windows PC, Apple Macintosh)

A common communication platform installed in different end systems and several IBC islands encompasses:

- Interworking units and user network interfaces for various networks: eg ATM, FDDI, Ethernet, ISDN-64.
- Lower layer adaptation protocols giving access to these networking technologies.
- A broadband high performance transport and network protocol XTPX with an application programmers interface (API) to support various quality of service parameters.

The project acts as the hub supporting RACE PL8 and the ACEs of PL7. In larger scale user groups, common tele-services and communication platform enable end-users to communicate trans-nationally without any change in their end systems, or in the underlying networking technology.

Key Issues

- Implementation and operation of two multimedia tele-services.
- Implementation of a common multimedia communication platform (multi-network, multi-vendor).
- Support of experiments and communication in IBC Islands and user groups.
- Promotion of multimedia communication to improve awareness.

Expected Impact

It will be proved that advanced tele-services can support a great variety of applications in different business sectors and scientific areas.

Additional services or specific implementations can be built upon the unique multi-vendor/multi-network communication platform. This common communication platform will support rapid growth of usage on isolated islands, and later interconnection of these without changes affecting established tele-service users.
