INDUSTRIAL FLUID BED PILOT PLANT FOR SOLID FUEL GASIFICATION

Cel

To design, construct and test gasification process suitable for the displacement of oil and natural gas in a wide variety of industrial combustion applications and to generate a synthesis gas from solid fuels with the use of pure oxygen.L%
The MCV plant was constructed and commissioned during the first half of 1984, with preliminary test runs carried out in the same year. Trials showed that gas of 8 Mj/m3 calorific value can be produced. As a result of plant commissioning and testing a programme or modification has been identified to increase plant reliability and availability.
The project was abandoned at this stage for technical and financial reasons.
The plant consists of the coal handling, ash removal, steam generation, water treatment, fuel oil, compressed air, thermal oxidizer system and the gas generating units. The plant gasifies solid fuel to generate a combustible gas at a nominal rate of 18 Gj/h. and calorific value of between 3,700 to 13,000 Kj/Nm3 (100 to 340 Btu/s Ft3).Producer and water gas reactions take place to form combustible gas. The process can accept a range of lignites, bituminous coals and anthracites. Poor quality, less expensive fuels can be used, including those with high ash, moisture or proportion of lines. Objectives are :
- to confirm the efficacy of the fluidized bed for producing combustible gas;
- to modify and improve the basic system to bring it up to standard for full commercial exploitation;
- to investigate improvements in energy efficiency, reliability and safety;
- to investigate use of limestone to remove H2S from the gas;
- to increase the calorific value of the gas;
- to test various solid fuels and, more particularly, high sulphur solid residues.
Supplied by a blower, air enters the sand bed and fuel through the sparge tubes.Superheated steam enters through the preliminary air plenun or, alternately, through separate lower sparge tubes. In order to maintain fluidization at low coal feed rates recycle gas can be added. Gas passes through a superheater and waste heat boiler, cooling to between 300 C and 450 C, providing sufficient heat to generate required process steam at 17 Bar, 450 C.
