CITY CENTRE COMBINED HEAT AND POWER

Cel

The aim of this project is to demonstrate that by the use of high efficiency generating and distribution having good standards of control and exhaust gas treatment that it is possible to build total energy utility systems into old city areas without extensive disruption and to offer real economic and environmental advantages. The project will include a demonstration of the use of the absorption chilling systems to improve the CHP system load factor and reduce electrical demand.

CHP generators have been chosen having a high electrical efficiency and the ability to operate on natural gas or heavy fuel oil. Gases from the generator at approximately 330 deg. C will pass to a selective catalytic reduction process (SCR) to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission. Ammonia (NH3) is injected into the gases prior to the SCR reactor in a process which converts NO & NO2 to N2 and H2O.
From the SCR reactor the gases will be cooled to approximately 150 deg. C before entering the flue gas desulphurisation process.
A west scrubber system will be used producing gypsum as a by-product.
Heat from the generation and exhaust gas system is produced in four grades A - 120 deg. C, B - 90 deg. C, C - 70 deg. C and D - 40 deg. C.
Heat grade A will be used during the heating season in an absorption heat pump system to upgrade heat grade D to grade C and in the summer period in absorption process to produce chilled water at 5 deg. C. Heat grades A, B and C will be used for district heating.
The district heating and district chilled water distribution pipework will be installed in tunnels, ducts and underground car parks. Electricity will be distributed through an independent system along the same route as the heat distribution system and also through the public electricity supply system. Existing building heating and chilled water control systems will be adapted to be compatible for operation with the integrated system.
The integrated system will be continuously monitored to assess performance, energy use and efficiency over the range of seasonal demand conditions. The individual elements of the system to be monitored and evaluated will include :
- CHP dual fuel engine generators
- Gas cleaning system
- Absorption chillers
- Air coolers
- Heat and chilled water storage systems
- Individual heat chilled water and electricity demand by consumers.
