THE USE OF A NOVEL RANGE OF LOW HEAD HYDROELECTRIC GENERATING UNITS

Cel

To demonstrate a new range of unregulated bulb type turbines mounted in a syphon arrangement and of rugged construction.
The installation has been designed to facilitate demonstration of the equipment operating both connected to, and isolated from, the national grid system. When established, the site will be used in connection with training and saler of the turbines.
Refurbishment and construction of the site began in September 1986 and commissioning was completed in February 1988. Only minor technical problems were encountered during the construction phase.
The original installation at Moulin-Corcu was destroyed by storms in 1983 and was part of a chain of sites on the Mayenne River. Much of the original civil works were intact and this, in conjunction with the adoption of syphon arrangement of turbine, has considerably restricted the civil costs on this project.
The design data is as follows for each turbine :
- head 2 m
- flow 4. 6 m3/s
- rating 75 kW
- speed 190 rev/min/min
The generators, one synchronous and one asynchronous, are gearbox driven at a shaft speed of 1000 rev/min and have the following characteristics :
Synchronous - output 66. 5 kW
- voltage 380 V, 3 phase, 50 Hz
Asynchronous - output 68. 7 kW
- Voltage 380 V, 3 phase, 50 Hz
Normally the electricity produced is fed to the local EDF network, although provision has also been made to feed electricity from the synchronous generator to a separate, isolated system under electronic load control. In addition, it is possible to control the plant remotely.
