THE USE OF A NOVEL, RADIO-CONTROLLED, FLOW MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR SMALL HYDRO ELECTRIC GENERATION

Cel

To demonstrate radio control of a control valve at a lake reservoir remote from the penstock intake and provision of power to operate the control valve.
To demonstrate flow control management by using storage from one catchment are to compliment the variable flow in second catchment area.
To demonstrate the optimisation of turbine efficiency by giving priority to more efficient nozzles.
The project is successful and electricity generated is supplied to the E.S.B. (i.e. Irish Grid).
The site consists of a catchment are of approximately 8 km2 which consists of 2 separate catchments, one, Lough Belshade, feeding a lake and one feeding the Corrober River. The catchment area feeding Lough Belshade is approximately 4 km2 and the outflow from this area is regulated by a weir and control valve at the outlet. The catchment area feeding the Corrober River is approximately 239 m and 800 m above sea level. The annual rainfall in the catchment areas is approximtaly 2,700 mm.
The intake is at 237 m and the powerhouse is 40 m above sea level. Gloss Head is 185 m and the mean flow of the river at the Intake is 6501/sec.
The flow from the first catchment area is controlled by a radio control valve fitted in the weir. The flow from this valve is regulated to optimise the output of the turbine. When the lake falls below a certain level the valve is shutdown at night time and weekends in order to increase the output during the day hours when a higher price is paid for electricity.
The pipeline is 1,340 m long, 500 mm diameter, and consists of HDPE, ductile iron and steel sections.
The Turbine is a vertical shaft multi jet pelton wheel with the following characteristics :
* Net head - 165 m
* Flow - 0.5 m/sec
* Output - 650 kW
