OPTIMIZATION OF ENERGY CONSUMPT OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT NETWORK BY MEANS OF THE REALISATION OF CENTRALIZED CONTROL OF SERVICE

Cel

The aim of the project is to realize a computerized control system which rationalizes and optimizes the use of the resources through the knowledge, in real time, of the operating stage of the vehicles, thus realizing a consumption reduction, a shortening of the dead hours, a use of the resources by cutting the wastes.
The innovative elements consist mainly in the installation of devices for the monitoring of the operating vehicle, connected with an intelligence on board, and in a complex radio transreceiving and radio location system, both a recent realization.
- Thanks to the information control system, the operation centre controls most of the city fleet vehicles. This allows a reduction of at least 50% in the number of people who would have to control the service in the area.
- There are great advantages for the customer because, thanks to this control, it is possible to improve the regularity of the service, co-ordinating necessary operations from the operation centre with the introduction of reserve vehicles and substitutions on the route in the event of vehicle breakdowns.
- The continual precise localisation of vehicles with the differential GPS system integrated with an odometer and gyroscope system allows the integration of the information control system with other data transmission systems. Today, the system is linked to the information panelsat bus stops that give users real time information on the arrival of vehicle; the link to the traffic light control system allows priority to be given to public running very late at appropriately equipped traffic lights.
- Using controlled vehicles it is possible to obtain enormous quantities of data about the scheduled and non-scheduled services. This brings considerable advantages for the planning and improvement of the service, also bringing about savings in the surveys which previously were carried out using field observers in order to obtain the same information which the system automatically supplies today.
- Thanks to the creation of the information control system our company has succeded in fitting all vehicles of the city and out-of-city fleet with radio for voice communication. Many of the drivers have expressed gratitude to the company for this initiative which makes it possible to give continual and co-ordinated support to the drivers in all difficult situations which can arise during services on route.
- The main advantages in term of energy saving are due to the service optimization based on the data collected from the on board systems. data collected gives the possibility of re-planning the service optimizing the use of the vehicles on the different lines.
Bologna ATC's centralised operation system is able to receive and process all important data regarding the operation and working of Bologna's public transport network.
The overall structure consists of four fundamental sub-system, each interacting with the others :
- operation centre;
- radio communication system;
- on-board system;
- localisation system;
THE OPERATION CENTRE
is the system supervisor. It provides a global view and permits a rational management, in real time, of the entire vehicle fleet which it controls. A perfect supervision of the vehicles is guaranteed by a continuous polling by which the operation centre cyclically interrogates all of the vehicles in order to ascertain their state and position. The vehicles are represented both cartographically and in simplified form. In the case of the cartographic description, the system is able to follow the vehicle even in out-of-service and off-route movements.
THE RADIO COMMUNICATION SYSTEM
, enables data, telephony and pre-coded messages to be communicated using VHF frequencies with radio channels assigned in concession to ATC.
THE ON-BOARD SYSTEM
supervises the vehicle and acts as go-between from the vehicle itself to the operation centre. It makes available a large quantity of information for purposes both of monitoring and assistance in real time as weel as for later analysis for statistical and programming purposes. It provides a complete picture of the functional state of the vehicle and consists of an on-board computer and periferals connected to it, of which the main ones are the radio and localisation system.
THE LOCALISATION SYSTEM
comprises a differential GPS receiver intergrated with odometer and gyroscope. This system, controlled by software procedures, guarantees great precision and continuity of localisation in a city area under every operational condition.
