Cel COST 505's overall aim was to improve European industry's technical base through a programme of targetted, pre-competitive research on topics of particular relevance to the design, operation and life extension of steam turbines. The work helped improve European industry's competitive position against severe worldwide competition.COST 505's research work related to problems found in many different parts of a steam turbine including high temperature components where creep processes are dominant and parts for low temperature service where stress corrosion and corrosion fatigue have to be avoided. Technical coordination groups based on work-sharing principles operated in the following areas : - 1. Stress corrosion and corrosion fatigue (12 projects) 2. Remanent Life (15 projects) 3. Bolts and rotors (13 projects) 4. Creep fatigue interaction (3 projects) 5. Welding (12 projects) 6a. High temperature crack growth (6 projects) 6b. NDE of large forgings (6 projects) The pre-competitive nature of the work has led to significant achievements in improving behaviour of steam turbine materials. The Project represented the first concerted action research programme in Europe in this technical area and involved leading manufacturing and research organisations.
