Project description
New tool lifts language barriers for train drivers
European rail transports some 1.6 billion tonnes of freight and 9 billion passengers each year. Rail transport is critical to the EU strategy for a more sustainable transport sector, economic and social cohesion, and connecting Europeans within and between Member States. Communication is key to increasing interoperability and cooperation between national rail networks across the EU. The concept of the Translate4Rail project is to offer drivers a fully comprehensive set of predefined standardised messages which encompass all they have to exchange with an infrastructure manager traffic controller in normal or exceptional operational situations in a country where they do not understand nor speak the local language. These specific messages will be channelled via a prototype IT tool to be developed in the context of Translate4Rail so to enable the driver and the traffic controller to understand each other even though they each speak in their native language.
