Cel The development of innovative techniques for the improvement of the overall stability, in particular seismic protection, applicable to the rehabilitation of cultural heritage. To achieve the aforesaid purposes, it is intended: - to identify representative study cases for cultural heritage, - to check the state-of-the-art on the rehabilitation techniques in use for the protection of cultural heritage, in particular as regards earthquakes, - to define levels of seismic actions and other loads to be used for the purpose of the study, - to investigate the features of highly ductile dissipative materials in detail in order to identify the most suitable, - to develop innovative protection systems using such materials, - to develop and use experimental and numerical procedures in order to evaluate design methodologies and technological solutions, - to develop relevant design recommendations for the rehabilitation of cultural heritage using the innovative techniques combined with the design of a pilot application. As regards seismic protection, although some innovative antiseismic techniques, with the aim of reducing the seismic loads acting on the structure (seismic isolation) or of stiffening it during earthquake (shock transmitters), have already been developed or are under development, these techniques are in general not suitable for wide-ranging application to cultural heritage. In fact, their use might even be dangerous for several ancient brick or stone structures, because of the lack of good structural connections, or they require works that, besides being quite visible are rather costly, at least for large structures. An alternative, very attractive new solution, which this project intend to develop, is to take advantage of the natural joints which exist - and move during time and in earthquakes - on ancient structures. This project will analyse the suitability of existing highly ductile and dissipative materials, to be inserted in such joints in order to largely increase their intrinsic damping capability, by hindering at the same time structural deterioration and helping in improving the overall stability of the structure. Expected achievements of the project are thus, the availability of advanced technological solutions, acceptable for large scale implementation, with the potential of protecting cultural heritage structures, which are quite numerous in Southern Europe, from instability issues. This will require, besides the development of the new techniques, considerable detailed experimental and numerical work.
