Cel Objectives and content This research proposal is based on the general experience that processing of crystallizable thermoplastic polymers is still a highly empirical matter. This holds notwithstanding the fact that, nowadays, the major amount of polymeric materials, as processed world-wide, is of this type. This statement may be surprising in an area of computer simulation and automation. Curiously enough, the reason for this omission must be sought in an already well-recognized problem, viz. the lack of overlapping knowledge and experience of scientists and engineers. But, with such statements alone no problems can be solved. The present group consists of people who have been discussing this matter at length. So, a combined effort is proposed of specialists in polymer science, crystallization kinetics, heat transfer, flow and practical processing. By the interaction of these disciplines new effects are unearthed as flow induced enhanced crystallization, producing special morphologies, or temperature gradient dependent kinetics, also reflected in the product morphology. Model experiments are proposed which, as a general goal, have to deliver the necessary data for modelling and computer simulation. The influences of additives, as nucleation agents etc., will not be overlooked. Last and not least the consequences of any purposely created structure (morphology) on the product quality (dimensional stability, outward appearance, ageing, mechanical test results) will be investigated in the hope to arrive at more than qualitative guidelines.
