Hydrodechlorination of organic and inorganic substances by metal catalysts

Cel

Polychlorinated organic substances are important pollutants for the environment due to their toxicity, mutagenicity and carcinogenicity. Their transformation by oxidative process leads to the formation of chlorinated dioxins and furans which are also polluting agents. The challenge, in this field of research, is to develop methods which are ecologically safe.

Generally speaking, the selective cleavage of C-S, C-O, C-CI and C-N bonds are reactions, which are used on both the laboratory and industrial scale for the production of fine chemicals. Milder conditions can be achieved with noble metals as catalysts. However, the mechanisms and kinetics of these reactions, especially hydrodechlorination, remains uncertain and controversial and more efficient catalytic formulations have to be found.

The purpose of this research is to investigate the kinetics and mechanisms of hydrochlorination of chlorinated hydrocarbons over a variety of catalysts with different supports, dispersions, preparations; to study the influence of reaction conditions (solvent, temperature hydrogen pressure) on the catalytic properties; and, finally, to find the most active, selective and stable catalysts for this reaction.

A full development of this study is possible by the collaboration of researchers working in different fields in catalysis - kinetic, surface and interface science. For these purposes, the four chosen laboratories are complementary and will benefit by combining their knowledge and equipment.
