Beam-plasma interaction experiments relevant to the physics of inertial confinement fusion with heavy-ion beams

Cel

The aim of this research project is an investigation of interaction processes of intense heavy ion beams with dense plasma. The understanding of the basic physics of such interaction phenomena are of great importance for the development of inertial confinement fusion with intense particle beams for future energy production. Recently interaction processes of heavy ions with moderately dense plasmas in the regime of ne = 1017-1019cm-3 have been investigated and strong deviations from energy deposition profiles in ordinary, cold matter have been observed. The dense plasma regime above ne = 1019 cm-3 was, however, not yet accessible for interaction experiments.

This project, therefore, aims to combine the possibilities of the new accelerator facilities at Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung mbH, in Darmstadt, with the capabilities of the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics in Moscow, the High Energy Density Research Centre in Moscow, and the Institute of Chemical Physics in Chernogolovka, Moscow region, as well as the low-energy tandem accelerator of the Institute of Nuclear Physics in Almaty, to study energy deposition and charge state distribution of heavy ions interacting with dense, non-ideal plasmas.

Different experimental techniques, which are provided by the collaborating institutions, will be applied. In summary, the following will be investigated: heating of a macroscopic cylindrical target volume by intense heavy-ion beams (Darmstadt); development of plasma targets using explosive shock wave compression (Chernogolovka); high-density plasma targets from capillary discharges and laser produced plasmas (Moscow); continuation of interaction experiments with discharge plasmas at low-energy accelerators (Almaty).

The different plasma targets developed during this research project will extend the regime of plasma parameters for beam-plasma interaction experiments. It will, for the first time, be possible to use intense heavy-ion beams at a macroscopic volume of high Z-solid state matter at plasma temperatures and observe the hydrodynamic behaviour of beam driven plasmas. Since theoretical predictions of heavy-ion energy loss in ionised matter vary from reduced energy loss to enhanced energy loss, the experimental results will help to put this question to rest.
