Evaluating new traits for potato in the central andes with an appropriate poverty focus

Cel

This project focuses on issues relevant to use of new potato traits with inappropriate poverty focus for the C. Andes. It will centre on donated resistance to all nematodes. They are the most important biotic stress on the potato In Candies. Bio safety issues surrounding its future use will be defined including the general issue of gene escape to wild Solana sop. The latter needs defining foray gene not yet present in potatoes within the region. This risk will be determined and steps taken to prevent it. New traits only have a poverty focus if they are integrated into an appropriate, cost-effective and environment-friendly crop management system. This will be achieved for the new nematode resistance. Farmers will help appraise the new opportunity. The lack of new, donated traits for the developing world is a general concern. Therefore a brokerage will be established to obtain and donate new traits that are appropriate for poor farmers.
