Electronic Resource Preservation and Access Network of Excellence

Cel

The ERPANET Project will make viable and visible information, best practice, and skills development in the area of digital preservation of cultural heritage and scientific objects. ERPANET will bring together memory organisations (museums, libraries and archives), ICT and software industry, research institutions, government organisations (including local ones), entertainment and creative industries, and commercial sectors (including for example pharmaceuticals, petro-chemical, and financial) to address the challenges posed by the widespread use of digital technologies including lack of awareness, fragmentation of knowledge and skills amongst the stakeholder communities about how to handle existing preservation problems, and how to plan effectively for the future and the need to identify and focus on core research/problem areas.
The dominant feature of the ERPANET will be the provision of a virtual clearinghouse and knowledge-base on state-of-the-art developments in digital preservation, the transfer of that expertise among individuals and institutions, and the development of an online and physical community focused on preservation.

Objectives:
ERPANET will enhance the preservation of cultural heritage and scientific digital objects through nine core objectives.

It will:
1. Identify and raise awareness of sources of information about the preservation of digital objects;
2. Appraise and evaluate information sources and developments in digital preservation and make available results of research and projects;
3. Provide an enquiry and advisory service on preservation issues, practice and technology;
4. Implement six development seminars to bring together experts to tackle key preservation issues;
5. Hold a suite of eight training workshops based on best practice reflecting the needs of the community;
6. Develop a suite of tools, guidelines, templates, and sixty case studies;
7. Stimulate research and encourage the development of standards;
8. Build a stakeholder community to provide coherent platform for proactive co-operation, collaboration, exchange and dissemination of results research and experience in the preservation of digital objects and;
9. Stimulate awareness among software producers of the preservation needs of the user community.

Work description:
The ERPANET will be an inclusive measure, which will ensure that information about and strategies to enable digital object preservation reaches the widest audiences and involves the broadest community. To achieve these goals ERPANET will encourage and seek wide and representative involvement of individuals and public and private institutions throughout the EU and its associated States. Over 36 months ERPANET will complete a series of seven workpackages to ensure that it achieves its nine core objectives and establishes itself as a self-sustaining virtual-clearinghouse.

Workpackage 1 covers ERPANET's start-up activities, including establishing membership protocols and quality assurance procedures, and putting in place ongoing network management practices during its EU sponsored phase.

WP2 establishes the technology infrastructure (web-based) that will form the foundation for ERPANET and initiates a number of procedures and instruments ensuring the success of Contractor-led activities in subsequent workpackages.

WP3 and WP4 are the central activities to ERPANET, focusing on building quality assured content as a knowledge resource and activity database, and developing a range of services and products for the stakeholder community (e.g. identification and selection of content, conducting of case studies). They represent continuous activities that will be implemented for most of the duration of the project.

WP5 covers ERPANET's seminars that will address leading-edge topics in digital object preservation.

WP6 enables a series of training workshops for practitioners that will make accessible best practices in digital preservation. To enhance on the ground awareness of ERPANET and to take advantage of the possibility of attracting new participants through local contact each of the activities under WP6 & WP7 will be held in a different EU country.

WP7 ensures the long-term sustainability of ERPANET's work, and the quality and widespread impact of its services and products.

Milestones:
Milestone 1-ERPANET web site; M2-Critical mass of content available at web site; M3-First services and products available and Virtual Enquiry and Advisory Service commissioned; M4-6 seminars completed and published; M5-Second range of services and products available to the ERPANET community; M6-8 best practice training workshops completed and published; M7-Mechanism for ensuring ERPANET moves towards building an active and linked community that ensures that ERPANET achieves a self-sustaining status; and, M8-Effective workplan delivery and community participation growing.
