Cel The purpose of the project is the application of existing models to define and assess optimal silvicultural systems, aiming at sustainable forest resource development and use. Models developed in a previous INTAS-project (FORMOD: forest models for sustainable management) will serve as a framework for quantitative assessment of traditional as well as new, innovative silvicultural systems aiming at integrated natural resource management. Emphasis will be on main forest functions: production, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity conservation. The specific objectives and tasks are as follows:- review, modelling and comparison of traditional and new silvicultural systems in Russia and the EU, using existing simulation models recently developed by the consortium;- application of these models to analyse concepts of sustainability for selected silvicultural systems, relevant for forest resources of Russia and of the EU, and accounting for present-day environmental changes;- application of these silvicultural models in two case studies (Prioksko-Terrasnyj Reserve and Russkije Les);- analysis and identification of optimal natural resource management strategies for the case studies;- project co-ordination, compilation and dissemination of results.Process-based models of forest growth and forest ecosystem dynamics have been developed both by Russian scientists and by research groups in Western Europe the past decades (e.g. Chertov et al., 1999). These models will be used to explore the consequences of different silvicultural strategies, accounting for e.g. carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, and transformation of plantation forests in mixed, uneven-aged stands. Such models can also be extended to address some of the criteria and indicators that have been identified as being relevant in view of sustainability of forest resource use. Such criteria and indicators can be drawn from the outcome of the pan-European process under the Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe. As part of this project, existing models of forest development will be extended to include links to quantifiable criteria and indicators for biodiversity value, thereby enabling an integrated analysis of forest use for productivity, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity conservation. So far, most models of forest growth and forest dynamics have been applied to the ecosystem level, and scaling-up to an enterprise or regional level is mainly done by summation over land cover classes. In this project, a landscape approach will be adopted, in which model input is based on geo-referenced base-line data, and model output is represented and integrated in a landscape or enterprise context. The outcome of the project will consist of scientific papers, models, and practical guidelines for adaptive silvicultural systems aiming at sustainable forest resource management.
