A connection of the isotope composition of recent snow in central Antarctica (Vostok Station) with meteorological and climatic conditions, as related to interpretation of ice-core records

Cel

The proposed project is dealing with the very detailed study of isotope composition of the upper snow thickness at Vostok Station (Antarctica). The main objective of the project is to refine paleoclimatic interpretation of the Vostok ice-core data using a direct comparison of the isotope composition of Vostok snow and the 42-year meteorological record from the station. This goal will be achieved by the joint scientific activity of 6 teams from France, Denmark and Russia.

The tasks to be fulfilled include: isotope, total beta and liquid conductivity measurements of snow samples collected at Vostok; the study of the efficiency of mass transfer processes in snow thickness to change the initial isotope composition of precipitation; the investigation of the influence of snow redistribution processes on snow isotope composition; the processing of the isotope data in relation with the meteorological and climatic data; an estimation of the change of the parameters affecting the snow isotope composition at Vostok during the LGM-Holocene transition. The expected results are: time series of snow accumulation rate and temperature at Vostok Station over the last ~200 years; a computer model for predicting the isotope composition of snow precipitation at Vostok from given meteorological and climatological parameters; an estimation of the amplitude of temperature change during the last climatic transition. Thus, the proposed project will make an important contribution to the methodology of isotope profiles from deep ice cores and produce valuable data on the isotope composition and accumulation rate of snow at Vostok Station.
