Historical foundations of management ethics in the late medieval and early modern period (13th-16th century)

Cel

The main objective of the project is to examine historical foundations of management ethics. The research will concern the 13th-16th century sources. That period is considered to be the formative period of the modern society, as the origin of many institutions, such as civil communes, universities, ventures or bills of exchange and origins of market-economy mentality can be found then.

The research is going to determine which trends of thought (considering mainly Aristotelian philosophy, religious concepts and c anon law, civil law, renaissance literature) and in which way influenced codes of "managing the business" (in Latin NEGOTIUM).

These codes will be presented basing on the analysis of following types of texts:
1) theological "summas",
2) treatises on contracts
3 ) commentaries on moral philosophy (especially commentaries on oeconomica dealing with managing family, household and business
4) practical guides for merchants.

The analysis will take into consideration the context of economic history (business practice of the epoch). The research will refer to key questions of business in pre-industrial society, such as: the social meaning of business (individual business and bonum commune), social evaluations of professional knowledge of merchants and artisans, the ways of business managing. The mentioned issues have significant universal value. The research will refer to question of market economy (capitalistic) mentality formation. Moreover the results related to great transformations of 13th and 16th century can be used to build a scientific model of business ethics related to system transformations.

The project has multidisciplinary character. It refers both to history of ideas and management science, presents first of all historical interest but also searches into foundation s of contemporary issues (especially such as: ethical aspects of system transformations or cultural factors of economic development).
