Cel The overall objective of RSSGRID is to provide reasoning middleware that will be available for use by high-level global services, be them Grid-based applications or other Grid services themselves. RSSGRID will go a step forward towards the realization of t he Semantic Grid vision and hence to the ambitious Ambient Intelligence IST objective. To achieve this objective, RSSGRID will provide innovative usable results in reasoning processes for the Semantic Grid, dealing with three of the key problems of Grid computing: heterogeneity, scalability and adaptability.a) Heterogeneity. In the Semantic Grid, knowledge will be present in all the layers of the Grid resources and will be distributed among different resources. Besides, this knowledge may be available in different formats. RSSGRID will adapt existing reasoning services to the Semantic Grid architecture, providing solutions to deal with distributed and heterogenous knowledge.b) Scalability. In order to process efficiently huge amounts of knowledge, reasoning services must move from centralised solutions to distributed solutions. RSSGRID will distribute complex reasoning processes into simpler independent ones, performed by distributed resources.c) Adaptability. Semantic Grid resources and reasoning process may fail during the execution of a reasoning task. RSSGRID will explore quality of service aspects of the Semantic Grid, so as to face the consequences of failures.
