CORDIS Express: Green energy and transport
Last week, the EU confirmed its path forward on climate and energy for the next 16 years as our leaders agreed on new 2030 goals. Under the new agreed targets, we aim to cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 40 % by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. An EU-wide binding target for renewable energy of at least 27 % has also been introduced, as well as an indicative energy efficiency target of at least 27 %. Following announcement of the deal, former Commission President José Manuel Barroso emphasised that ‘no player in the world is as ambitious as the EU when it comes to cutting greenhouse gas emissions’. But how will Europe move towards achieving these bold targets? A well-functioning, reformed Emissions Trading System (ETS) is one mechanism that will support the effort. Cutting edge research into green energy and transport will also certainly play a key role in the endeavour. From solar, wind and ocean to energy efficiency, nuclear and integrating ICT in all energy fields, identifying supplies of secure, clean and efficient energy(opens in new window) is one of the main challenges identified by the Horizon 2020 programme. That’s why a budget of EUR 5 931 million has been allocated to non-nuclear energy research for the period 2014-2020. Likewise, transport is also deeply implicated in climate and energy issues – it Transport accounts for about 63 % of oil consumption and 29 % of all CO2 emissions. This has to change. Research dedicated to exploring smart, green and integrated transport(opens in new window) is allocated a budget of EUR 6 339 million for the period 2014-2020.
