Unlocking the untapped innovation potential of SMEs in lightweight construction

Advanced lightweight materials have come a long way as industry shifts towards greater energy consciousness and sustainability. But SMEs have not yet taken advantage of the greener and more sustainable use of advanced materials.

Lightweight construction will play a key role in a decarbonised and efficient circular economy. To this end, significant weight reductions have been achieved and performance has been boosted for advanced lightweight materials such as polymer-based composites, ceramic matrix composites and light metal alloys. However, SMEs have yet to fully exploit these scientific and technical advancements. The EU-funded AMULET project is organising two open calls to improve SMEs’ innovation potential through a cross-regional and cross-sectoral knowledge exchange approach. The focus is on the three above-mentioned advanced materials in the automotive, aerospace and aeronautics, energy and building sectors. The first call is now open with an application deadline set for 30 June 2022. Consortia of at least two and no more than three SMEs will be selected to lead innovation projects. These projects will address the development and implementation of demonstration activities around technology and systems applicable to 12 challenges. Divided into 12 thematic domains, these consist of specific challenges that are currently blocking the penetration and market uptake of the three main advanced materials. “AMULET counts on the participation of European innovative SMEs with a clear commercial ambition and a potential for high growth and internationalisation,” states the Guide for Applicants. “Innovation is needed to overcome the barriers faced by the advanced lightweight materials and technologies and enable their contribution to environmental and societal challenges. … The SMEs’ ideas will answer real industry challenges, which ensures market’s relevance and future uptake.” Consortia will receive up to EUR 120 000 (max. EUR 60 000 per SME) funding. AMULET will also provide continuous support on technical and economic topics through educational materials to SMEs interested in lightweight materials. The total budget of the first open call as a direct support to SMEs is up to EUR 1 277 000. AMULET brings together an extensive network of about 1 700 SMEs, more than 34 large companies, and over 90 universities and research and innovation institutes. Ending in November 2024, the 3-year project aims at creating new value chains by fostering the penetration of advanced lightweight materials in industry.
