BIOTECH 2: Results of calls
The first call for proposals for the Community's specific RTD programme in the field of biotechnology, (1994-1998) was published in January 1995 (OJ No C 12 of 17.1.1995 p. 18). The 60 projects, which will receive a total of ECU 73 million, involve 528 laboratories including 77 from industry - a substantial increase on the previous Commission programme in this area. The distribution of projects by area covered by the call is as follows: - Area 1. Cell factories: 20 projects; - Area 2.2. Genome analysis (function search): 6 projects; - Area 2.3. Genome analysis (comparative analysis): 3 projects; - Area 3.2.1. Animal mapping and selection and 3.2.3. Somatic gene therapy: 7 projects; - Area 5.1. In addition, four preparatory awards were granted under Area 6 - Structural biology, one under Area 5 - Immunology and trans-disease vaccinology, and one under Area 3.2 - Animal physiopathology. The second call for proposals for the BIOTECH 2 programme, published in September 1995 (OJ No C 240 of 15.9.1995 p. 9), has, meanwhile, received a record number of proposals (786). Evaluation is currently underway and preliminary results are expected shortly. A third call for proposals is due to be published in June 1996.
