The European Commission has proposed that the European Atomic Energy Community should become a member of the Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization (KEDO). The Commission also proposes that an annual contribution of ECU 15 million, out of Community funds, should be made to KEDO over the next five years, and that European technical expertise should be supplied to KEDO. The EU Council of Ministers agreed on 26 February 1996 to give ECU 5 million to KEDO, and the Commission sees its proposal as a further step towards preventing nuclear proliferation in the Korean peninsula.
