The Council of Ministers of the European Union has adopted Regulation (EC) No 736/96 of 22 April 1996 on notifying the Commission of investment projects of interest to the Community in the petroleum, natural gas and electricity sectors. This Regulation repeals Regulation (EEC) No 1056/72. The Regulation requires Member States to notify the Commission annually, in the light of the Community's commitment to introduce a common energy policy, of investments in energy projects above a certain capacity. The projects required to be notified are in the fields of petroleum refining, natural gas transport and distribution, and electricity production and transport. The capacities above which projects are required to be notified are listed in the Annex to the Regulation.
