Identifying the best waste management strategies

The 'Holistic assessment of waste management technologies'(Holiwast) project conducted environmental, economic and social comparisons of different waste management strategies. The consortium created bespoke tools for related decision making and policy support.

Successful sustainable waste management must first identify the waste treatment approach most suitable to the particular circumstances. Therefore, Holiwast researchers investigated and compared different technologies and strategies, including current legislation and EC communications. Three contrasting case studies were examined based in Kattowice, Poland, Turin, Italy and Tølløse, Denmark. Project partners identified how the best technologies could be implemented for different socioeconomic contexts within an integrated waste management framework. In addition, policy instruments were evaluated for promoting these technologies and supporting decision makers. Results from the Holiwast project were disseminated though an international conference. The conference raised awareness of effective implementation of policy instruments and assessed environmental, economic and social aspects of different approaches developed within the EU. In addition, support tools developed by Holiwast were promoted and knowledge exchanged and utilised with regard to national and local practices. The Holiwast project supported policy and decision makers by developing a tool for assessing waste treatment technologies in a broad context. The initiative also developed guidelines and recommendations for the use of results from case studies, best practice criteria and criteria for the benchmarking of available and emerging technologies.
