The European Environment Agency (EEA) has published an invitation to tender relating to the provision of assistance in the finalization of its forthcoming "State of the Environment" report. The main task of the EEA is to produce objective, reliable and comparable information for those concerned with framing, implementing and further developing European environmental policy, as well as for the wider European public. Its "State of the Environment" reports are a very important means of publishing and disseminating this information. The EEA is now in the process of preparing its next three-year report, the final draft of which must ready for December 1998. The report will cover an extended geographic area, including: the 15 EU Member States; Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein; the ten Central and Eastern European accession countries; the Arctic and Baltic regions bordering the EU; and the trans-boundary Mediterranean regions. Its aim is to provide an overview of the present and the foreseeable state of the environment from the point of view of quality, pressures and sensitivities. The agency is currently looking for a highly experienced consultant to assist the editors in the final writing and lay-out of the report. To have relevant experience in writing environmental reports will be of far more importance for this task than general editing experience. The working language is English. The consultant selected will be entrusted with the following activities: - Editing the chapters of the report (14 in total); - Cross-checking and ensuring consistency of style across chapters; - Working on the scientific soundness of the text form the viewpoint of an environmental journalist; - Balancing the text and the illustrations in terms of appropriateness and relevance; - Capturing the main messages which should form the basis and the structure of the executive summary of the report; - Drafting the executive summary. The work to be carried out should be completed within a period of five months from July to December 1998. The consultant will be asked to work, when required, at the EEA premises in Copenhagen in order to facilitate the final editing.
