The second international conference on architectures and design methods for balanced automation systems, BASYS'96, will take place in Costa da Caparica (Lisbon), Portugal, on 17-20 June 1996. The conference is being sponsored by the European Commission (DG III) under its initiative for long-term research, training and scientific relations with Latin America. It is organized jointly by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP).

The aim of the event is to present experiences and to discuss the challenges in implementing manufacturing systems. The need for an adequate balance between automated solutions and the integration of human participation is emphasized. Special attention will be given to SMEs and to the problems of reengineering and migration from legacy systems. The conference programme will cover the following major topics:

- Shop floor and process reengineering;
- Industrial experiences in automation systems;
- Anthropocentric manufacturing.

The conference's final day will feature a workshop on theoretical problems in design and control of manufacturing systems, and a tutorial on multi-agent systems.
