The ACTS Mobile Communications Summit '97, "Towards a Wireless Communication Society", will take place in Aalborg, Denmark, from 7 to 10 October 1997. The conference is being organized jointly by the European Commission and the University of Aalborg (DK). It is supported under the Community's specific programme in the field of Advanced Communications Technologies and Services (ACTS) and, in particular, by the ACTS projects in the "Mobility, personal and wireless communications" domain.

This is the second edition of the ACTS Mobile Communications Summit, an event aimed at providing an annual forum for the dissemination of the results of European research initiatives, undertaken within the context of the ACTS programme, towards third generation mobile communication systems such as UMTS, MBS and WLANs (including their satellite components).

In addition to bringing together the partners of all ACTS projects in the "Mobile Communications" domain, participants in the conference will include researchers, industrialists and operators/service providers with an interest in how the mobile and wireless communications sector is going to evolve in the coming years, both from the technological and applications/services points of view.

The Conference will consist of 36 technical sessions, running in three parallel streams, comprising 158 original papers. The papers will present significant research and development advances in the following areas:

- Technology/system trials;
- Mobile satellite systems;
- Mobile/wireless services and applications;
- UMTS/MBS/WLAN system design;
- Service access procedures and QoS;
- Base station technology;
- Multi-functional and multi-mode terminals;
- Multiple access techniques;
- Mobile multimedia;
- Receiver and transmitter technology;
- Network management, TMN, IN;
- Radio over fiber;
- Digital cellular technology and planning;
- Wireless ATM;
- Mobile network aspects;
- Advanced antenna systems;
- Broadband wireless local loop;
- Standards.

In addition, two round tables on "Adaptive Communications" and "Radio Access" have been organized, with the participation of experts in the sector. A poster session will be organized displaying the main results of the ACTS "Mobile" projects and other related national programmes. Project demonstrations will also be available.
