Satellite-based communications systems within IPv6 networks

Obiettivo

The SatSix project will implement innovative concepts and cost-effective solutions for broadband satellite systems and services. The project will promote the introduction of the IPv6 protocol into Satellite-based communication systems. It will also contribute to the implementation of the eEurope Action Plan by defining new cost-effective satellite system solutions and encouraging the use of satellites as an enabler for universal access to e-services.

A prime focus for these systems will be service platforms built upon the sound basis established by the European DVB (-S2 and -RCS) standards for satellite systems. It is also important that, through SatSix, the industry addresses the next generation Internet and increased Internet IP address space ( as offered by IPv6) and enhances its competitive position in Satellite Broadband Multimedia Systems by exploiting the common components defined by the European DVB-S2 and DVB-RCS broadband standards.

To achieve these objectives, the SatSix project has chosen a 4-step approach:
- Identification and analysis of the impacts of IPv6 on Satellite-based network: Integration of heterogeneous networks (Sat +WiFi,Sat+WiMax,..) .Validate the concept by simulation followed by emulation using a testbed
- Support live experimentation with end-to-end applications (eEurope).

To achieve these goals, the SatSix consortium brings together leading actors in the field: satellite and telecommunication industry, operators, SME's, research institutes and universities. This project is key to reduce the «digital divide», between urban and rural areas, and also between regions by ensuring service continuity over heterogeneous networks.
