Scenarios for comparison are described using the three already defined use cases 1 Food packaging 2 Home care product packaging 3 Personal care product packaging New value chains and their products will be compared to the baseline treatment scenarios and reference packaging according to the feasible process cascades and applications The deliverable will also include process flow schemes of the full value chain in these three defined scenarios including collection sorting pretreatment recycling manufacturing of the new packaging use of the packaging for food or personal care products and the endoflife treatment of the packaging Preliminary mass and energy data inventories for all scenarios will be reported This deliverable is the outcome of Tasks T71 and T72

Updated Data Management Plan will include updates in Data Management and the performed Data Management reporting.

Guidelines on Design for Recycling (öffnet in neuem Fenster)

The design guidelines will be reported for recycling of flexible films with pragmatically selected quantitative scientific results and will include procedures towards design for delamination, deinking, solvent based recycling/CreaSolv®, with TBS. The deliverable will be the outcome of Task T3.7.

Scenarios for comparison preliminarily described in D7.1 are updated where necessary. Also the process flow schemes of the full value chain with data inventories will be updated where necessary. This deliverable is the outcome of Tasks T7.1 and T7.2.

The database will include the type of the waste fractions entering into WP3 from WP2, WP5 and WP6, their in depth characterisation, and will organise/track and streamline their treatment and recycling processes. This will be the outcome of Task T3.1.

Challenge test for demonstration of cleaning efficiency (öffnet in neuem Fenster)

Challenge tests are an already well-established quality control tool for recycling processes of PET materials, the existing approaches will be evaluated for PE and optimized, where appropriate, considering the specific diffusion and sorption properties’ (contamination and decontamination) behaviour of PE. The challenge tests protocols will be utilized for the demonstration of cleaning efficiency of the new recycling processes, including the delamination/deinking processes and the CreaSolv® process. The test procedure and the results will be reported. The outcome is linked to Task T4.3.

Business plan incl. exploitation, marketing plan, and financing needs for most promising technology (öffnet in neuem Fenster)

The exploitation, marketing, and financial plan for the most promising technology will be reported in this deliverable. The results will be based on the Business Model Canvas. This deliverable is linked to Task T8.2 and will be the outcome of this task.

Guidelines for tracer printing in packaging for effective sorting, management after use (öffnet in neuem Fenster)

Tracer printing will be investigated; in terms of the location of the tracer within a laminate, the tracer type, its concentration, particle size, all depending on the ink type. The various printing techniques will be screened as described in Task T5.5. The guidelines will be based on the results obtained at the end of these investigations for tracer printing in flexible packaging for effective sorting of food packaging after end-of-life.

Evaluation of barrier concepts (öffnet in neuem Fenster)

Fraunhofer will evaluate the performance of highly effective functional migration barrier concepts to assess if contaminations of polyethylene recyclates are reduced down to levels below of any toxicological concern and to qualify these grades to be used in specific food packaging applications. The assessments will be performed by combining migration and permeation experiments with theoretical modelling. Conclusions will be withdrawn on the effectiveness of the barrier layers as functional migration barriers and will be reported for defining the final design of the packagings in WP5. This deliverable is linked to Task T4.5.

Analysis and reporting of current multi-layer food packaging in the waste streams in Europe (öffnet in neuem Fenster)

The current multi-layer food packaging in waste streams of different European countries (France, Belgium and Germany) will be classified into a consolidated list of technical types, defined by their layer sequence with the applied polymer types, adhesives, inks as well as size, shape, weights and use of labels or direct printing. SUEZ will further investigate and document the behavior of MLC in current sorting lines to identify, in which sorting fractions MLC occur at all and which sorting methods/technologies are decisive for MLC’s fate in sorting lines. Sorting result, sorting quality and percentage of MLC and monofilms in different streams will be determined and their principal capability to be sorted will be assessed. The results of the analysis will be documented as a report. This deliverable is linked to Task T2.1.

A complete business model(s) based on the business model canvas methodology (öffnet in neuem Fenster)

This deliverable will include the identification of the key business components through a business model canvas (BMC). There will be a full definition of the model, and explanation of the organisational, ownership and partnership structure for the market launch of the proposed solutions. Separate BMC will also be performed, in case of the different markets. The deliverable report is linked to Task T8.2 and will be and outcome of this task.

Regranulates delivery with technical data sheets (TDS) to partners for further processing (öffnet in neuem Fenster)

The recyclates mechanically recycled into ready-to-use granulates will be characterised in terms of the residual solvents, or delamination/deinking medium, for their relevant physico-chemical and mechanical properties, as well as for their processability via (multi-layered) film blowing, injection moulding or thermoforming, depending on their processing-related propertiesTechnical Data Sheets will be drafted for each recyclate for their further processing, including: •processing-related properties: viscosity/flow (MFI, rotation rheology), melting behaviour (DSC), Oxidation Induction Time (OIT);•mechanical properties of the processed polymers (on ISO test bars): modulus, yield, strain-at-break (tensile test), impact strength (Charpy impact). The documents will be the outcome of Task T3.5.

Production of PE PCR pellets with a quality of over 0.9 related to processing and mechanical properties compared to virgin pellets (öffnet in neuem Fenster)

Possible formulation procedures for the production of PE PCR pellets with a quality of above 0.9 based on their processability and mechanical properties compared to virgin polymers will be prepared and recommendations will be provided for recyclability evaluation protocols. The report will be an outcome of Task T3.5.

Characterization of input material, benchmarking of cleaning processes (öffnet in neuem Fenster)

The analytical and biological (“bio¬assays”) characterisation of the novel PE recyclates in the project and also commercially available defined recyclate grades selected from the market, will be performed and compared with virgin PE. Target levels will be defined for relevant inherent molecules and contaminants that are present in the recycled granulates and that are regarded as toxicologically relevant for the safety assessment of the packaging applications. The characterisations, assessments, comparisons will be performed based on these defined target levels. The results will be summarised in the report, which will be the outcome of Task T4.2.

Report on TBS sorting efficiency and sorting trials (öffnet in neuem Fenster)

The sorting result will be analyzed in terms of the tracer type tracer integration tracer concentration status of packaging items and the sorting efficiency will be calculated TBS sorted fraction will be provided to WP3 for recycling and purification and to WP4 for characterization of its NIAS and IAS status The results will be reported This deliverable will be the outcome of Task T24

Delivery of test model samples to Task T4.5 for migration tests, and characterisation results (öffnet in neuem Fenster)

Laminates with functional barriers ie SiOx AlOx optional andor polymer based EVOH and including virgin PE layer spiked with defined amounts of model contaminants produced at labscale andor pilot scale will be delivered to Task T45 at the sizes required for the tests to be performed in Task T45 The characterisation results will be evaluated to identify the most promising functional barrier types This report will be the outcome of Task T52

Verification of barrier concept for the final demonstrator (öffnet in neuem Fenster)

The laminate structures of the final packaging (‘demonstrator’) containing PE-PCR will be assessed with respect to migration barrier properties and effectiveness for the targeted food products and applications defined in WP6. The report will be the outcome of Task T4.5.

Guidelines for industrial take up - Technical, safety and practical guidelines to support circular use of PE PCRs for the same flexible food packaging application again (öffnet in neuem Fenster)

This deliverable will be the outcome of Task T6.5. It will include sections like describing the type of the markers to add to which coatings, SBS and TBS system implications on sorting, set-up of recycling line for advanced recycling of PE for food packaging, and recommendations for further scale-up. Other sections to be included will be the practical handling of the materials (pre-treatments, storage conditions, lifetime), and safety aspects.

Demonstration of circular use in flex. food packaging based on CFP technologies (öffnet in neuem Fenster)

The circular use of PE-PCRs coming from TBS flexible food packaging waste will be demonstrated. This deliverable is linked to Task T6.4 and T6.5.First in Task T6.4, PE-PCRs will be produced from TBS food packaging waste, and then the flexible packaging material thereof is produced. Finally, in Task T6.5, the packaging of food products is performed at NESTLE. The input waste quantity, responsible partner for the input waste materials, partners for purification and recycling processes, partner location, quantity of the output materials, number of the demonstrators are as listed below: - Waste input: 400 kg tracer marked food packs produced at Fraunhofer, AMCOR-G, AMCOR-K and NESTLE, and 1000 kg food flexible packaging waste delivered by SUEZ in France.- ca. 250 kg PE-PCR production (process cascades as defined in WP3): KREYEN (deodourization), SIEGWERK, UGENT (deinking), Fraunhofer (dissolution based separation), UM (mechanical recycling) - Output: ca. 400 kg PE based mono-material laminate with PE virgin, PE PCR, functional barriers, tracers printed by SIEGWERK, AMCOR-G and AMCOR-KMechanical and barrier characterisations of the material will be performed at Fraunhofer.- Packaging of food products: At least 2 types of demonstrators of flexible food packaging products: 1) coffee packed in flexible packaging, 2) creamer packed in flexible packaging in sachets. Shelf life tests with the product filled packages will be performed on-site at NESTLE and Fraunhofer.- PE PCR production will continue using the demonstrators, in a second cycle of Task T6.4. In Cycle 2, 250 kg of PE-PCR will be produced. This deliverable will include the food packaging demonstrator specifications (i.e. at least 2 demonstrators in total), input waste, purification and recycling processes, laminate production and its characterisation, and finally the demonstrator production details and package performance test results. The deliverable will be the outcome of Tasks T6.4 and T6.5, and T2.2 to T2.4. The main results will be to find out sorting efficiency, PCR yields, quality, cost, LCSA and comparison to SOA PCRs, ...
