Supporting and Developing WIdening Strategies to tackle Hydroclimatic Extreme Events: impacts and Sustainable solutions for cultural heritage

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - SD-WISHEES (Supporting and Developing WIdening Strategies to tackle Hydroclimatic Extreme Events: impacts and Sustainable solutions for cultural heritage)

Periodo di rendicontazione: 2023-01-01 al 2023-12-31

Heritage is defined by UNESCO as “our legacy from the past, what we live with today, and what we pass on to future generations” - it is who we are and what shapes our identity. But cultural heritage does not refer only atto monuments and collections of objects (tangible culture): it also embeds intangible culture (social practices, traditions, language and knowledge) and natural sites (landscapes, biodiversity).
SD-WISHEES aims to support European widening strategies by enabling collaboration between national Research & Innovation funding members to protect cultural heritage in Europe and beyond in a context of climate change characterized by more frequent and severe hydroclimatic extreme events.
Through their membership as funder contributors or experts in the Climate JPI, the Water JPI and the PRIMA Foundation, the SD-WISHEES Consortium gathers 16 partners from widening countries within Horizon Europe (Malta, Portugal, Romania), Associated countries to the programme or with which negotiations are currently taking place (Albania, Georgia, United Kingdom), international parties (Kenya) and EU countries with long experience in Framework Programmes (Belgium, Italy, France).
The project objectives are:
• Enhance cross-sector collaborations and strategic coordination between water, climate and cultural heritage programmes.
• Launch and monitor joint activities to measure progress towards widening.
• Address potential barriers for collaboration.
• Evaluate the impacts of those joint activities on widening policies as well as EU and international policy frameworks, notably the EU Green Deal and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
• Implement joint activities enabling the market, regulatory and societal uptake of results.
The project is structured around 6 work packages (WP):
WP1 “Management and Coordination”, dedicated to manage and coordinate SD-WISHEES, ensuring seamless integration and organisation of project activities. The main activities are: consortium coordination; administrative, legal and financial management; project goals monitoring, quality assurance and risk management; coordination with other JPIs, Horizon Europe Partnerships, international R&I initiatives, Horizon Europe Missions, and organisations working in the field of cultural heritage protection.
WP2 “Strategic planning of activities”, which aims to identify the main R&I needs on the water-climate change-cultural heritage links within the ERA and therefore drive the strategic planning of the collaboration across Europe and in widening countries, specifically including in the Balkans and Africa. The main activities are: roadmapping the strategic R&I needs and priorities; stakeholder mapping; organisation of stakeholder consultations.
WP3 “Implementation and monitoring of joint activities – TAP action”, which focuses on carrying out activities leading to the launch, management and monitoring of SD-WISHEES joint TAP (Thematic Annual Programming) action. The main activities are: development of the SD-WISHEES Joint Vision and annual Work Plans; preparatory work and launch of a TAP action; setting up the monitoring approach of the TAP.
WP4 “Increase awareness of decisionmakers, policymakers and the civil society through communication, dissemination and outreach actions”, dedicated to the external communication, outreach and dissemination of expertise regarding the impacts of hydrological extreme events, with a particular emphasis on cultural heritage. The main activities are: communication, dissemination and exploitation plan including tools and materials; optimization and upgrade of existing dashboards as the strategy to raise awareness; outreach towards the stakeholders from researchers to policymakers & civil society.
WP5 “Strengthening the ERA with widening actions: understanding the impacts on global challenges, SDGs and European policies”, which aims at reinforcing the ERA by fostering better and widening R&I collaborations to protect cultural heritage from hydroclimatic extreme events. The main activities are: assessment of hurdles for participation in transnational R&I programmes; global challenges, SDGs and European policies: contribution and impact of widening and alignment.
WP6 “Supporting and Widening the Market, Regulatory and Societal Uptake of R&I results”, which aims to identify practices and explore means of enhancing and widening the uptake of research and innovation results for appropriate use across Europe and beyond. The main activities are: identification and analysis of existing innovation pathways; validation and update of instruments/activities for innovation uptake; showcasing use of innovations pathways, instruments and activities.
