SMCNetZero is an 18-month project focusing on creating and strengthening local innovation ecosystems in SMCs and creating a Satellite Network of innovation actors including public sector representatives from Small and Medium-sized cities (SMCs), SMEs, academia, NGOs, and investors across Europe.

The SMCNetZero project is designed to foster the adoption of zero-emission solutions. After the Market Analysis Research, the project highlights the transport, digital planning, and energy sectors across small and medium-sized cities (SMCs) and SMEs. By encouraging the dissemination of essential information on decarbonization solutions, funding opportunities, and market participants, the project aims to facilitate informed decision-making and adoption of innovative technologies. To enhance collaboration and networking, a digital space and toolkit will be developed, connecting providers of zero-emission solutions with public authorities from SMCs.

The project also focuses on identifying and engaging innovation leaders from the public and private sectors across various regions, ensuring the delivery of high-value content and active participation in project activities. A critical aspect of the project is to ensure broad participation and maximize impact, with a particular emphasis on engaging underrepresented groups and organizations. Finally, the project aims to facilitate the implementation and scale-up of innovation projects within SMCs by developing core common solutions and promoting demand aggregation. This approach will not only increase the market attractiveness for SMEs but also provide better value for the cities involved, paving the way for a more sustainable and economically viable future.

The SMCNetZero project aims to equip small and medium-sized cities (SMCs) and enterprises (SMEs) with the tools and knowledge needed to reach net-zero emissions. Recent efforts have focused on conducting market analysis, developing digital tools, and organizing workshops to address decarbonization challenges.

Market Analysis: Through 52 interviews with representatives from 26 SMEs and 26 SMCs, the project explored key challenges, motivations, and barriers to net-zero initiatives, highlighting the importance of political will and stakeholder engagement.

SMCNetZero Digital Forum: The project launched an online platform offering tools like the Funding Finder and an AI Chatbot to help SMCs and SMEs access financial support for decarbonization efforts.

Workshops: Collaborative workshops tackled issues like siloed thinking within municipalities, promoting knowledge sharing to overcome common decarbonization challenges.

Best Practices Catalog: The project compiled a guide to internal and external collaboration, aiming to foster innovation and synergy, particularly in low-innovation ecosystems.

Capacity Building Program: Divided into three modules, this program supports cities in developing tailored strategies for net-zero, exploring enablers like financing and living labs, and adapting these strategies to local contexts.

The SMCNetZero project has delivered several results that go beyond the current state of the art, significantly contributing to decarbonization efforts in Small and Medium-sized Cities (SMCs). Key innovations include:

Digital Forum: A centralized platform for knowledge-sharing and collaboration, used by over 200 stakeholders, offering tools like the Decarbonization Toolkit and a Funding Finder. These tools simplify the process of implementing decarbonization strategies, which are not readily available in current urban development initiatives.

Decarbonization Toolkit: Featuring 5 innovative tools, the toolkit provides practical resources for SMCs and SMEs to plan and implement zero-emission projects efficiently. The use of this toolkit bridges the gap between available decarbonization knowledge and its practical application.

Mobility Islands Concept: A novel approach adopted by 19 SMCs, demonstrating the replication of successful mobility solutions, accelerating decarbonization while ensuring scalability across regions.

These innovations provide substantial value, ensuring that cities have access to cutting-edge decarbonization solutions and fostering an ecosystem of collaboration. The Roadmap to Net Zero further supports cities in aligning their strategies with net-zero goals, while the project's focus on cross-regional collaboration and knowledge transfer positions it beyond current urban sustainability frameworks. The project has also helped stimulate investor interest, contributing to long-term financial and infrastructural support for SMC decarbonization initiatives.
