Multiscale Modeling of Nanostructured Interfaces for Biological Sensors

Ziel

A multi-scale modeling study is proposed to develop a fundamental understanding of the segregation and self assembly of phospholipids and polypeptide amphiphiles at interfaces, and their interaction with liquid crystalline phases. The current study is moti vated by recent experiments that indicate that liquid crystalline phases are capable of interrogating the structure of phospholipidic interfaces at the scale of nanometers, thereby providing a powerful tool for probing nanoscale structure, and providing th e basis for development of sensors for biological molecules. This study is also motivated by experiments from the Stupp group that indicate that peptide amphiphile molecules self-assemble into highly organized structures whose interfaces provide an ideal s ubstrate for cell growth.
