Recovered Fuels combined with Biomass

Obiettivo

The RECOMBIO project is concerned with developments and demonstrations of innovative approaches to the high efficient co-utilisation of low quality biomasses and Solid Recovered Fuels (SRF) produced from municipal solid waste (MSW) for electricity production and combined heat and power (CHP) usage, at competitive costs, high plant availability, and advanced energy efficiency. The production of quality controlled biomass, bio-residues, SRF, and an intelligent fuel management of the producer and user is essential for the project success, which will also be investigated and demonstrated in the frame of the project. The exploitation potential of the results are significant for future biomass power generation or CHP projects, due to the fact that different technologies, such as circulating and bubbling fluidised beds (CFB, BFB), meeting best available techniques (BAT) standards are incorporated to demonstrate the highly efficient utilisation chain for the intelligent co-utilisation of low quality biomass and SRF.

Under the RECOMBIO project it is proposed to perform a number of demonstrations of relevant SRF production and utilisation technologies with new developments, substantial investments, long-term monitoring, assessment of the key technical aspects, Life Cycle Analyses (LCA), and enhanced material recycling.

The achievement in exploitation and transfer of knowledge and technology gained in the project will occur through the normal business activities of utilities, producers, and manufactures involved. Along with providing valuable information to support future decisions by key utilities, manufacturers, authorities, etc., the results will assist the European Commission in decision making regarding re-examining targets set in the European Union’s Landfill Directive and strengthen the recovery option in the waste hierarchy of the Waste Directive. The overall objective is to enhance the future use of biomass and SRF, facilitating the creation of a sustainable energy market across Europe and demonstrating the use of short-term available BAT technologies that will reduce CO2 emissions.
