NOVEL MECHANISMS INACTIVATING CHECKPOINT RESPONSE

Final Report Summary - CHECKPOINT-INACT (NOVEL MECHANISMS INACTIVATING CHECKPOINT RESPONSE)

Checkpoint-INACT fully achieved its scientific objectives. Namely, the characterization of novel factors implicated in the DNA damage response, an essential player in protecting the genetic information in our cells and preventing cancer. During these four years, we understood how key players protecting the integrity of our genes work, revealing previously unknown mechanisms by which our cells respond to insults provoking changes in our genetic material. The results obtained create a framework for understanding the role of new factors in preventing tumour development. Checkpoint-INACT’s scientific results were made available to other scientists in numerous prestigious international meetings and were published in very prestigious scientific journals.

Checkpoint-INACT has also allowed the researcher to establish his own independent laboratory, with the participation of several international researchers, and worked in close contact with other scientists at the Institute for Functional Biology and Genomics’ (IBFG) in Salamanca (Spain) and researchers at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). As a result, scientific skills and expertise obtained by the researcher during his career was transferred to the host institution and its environment. The project also helped establishing a number of collaborations with international research groups. Importantly, Checkpoint-INACT greatly helped the researcher in his career by contributing to his professional integration in Europe and to obtained permanent research position. Finally, Checkpoint-INACT’s research team participated in numerous to outreach activities aimed at bringing the importance of science and the scientific career to the general public. In these activities, the basics of cancer biology, science’s impact on daily life and scientific careers to the common people and to young university students.
