Muon Spectroscopy of Excited States

Final Report Summary - MUSES (Muon Spectroscopy of Excited States)

A high-power tuneable laser and the necessary structural modification to the existing spectrometer has been commissioned and is fully. The facility operates a full user-programme, with active research projects in a wide variety of disciplines (biology, biochemisty, chemistry, materials science and physics). The key result of the project is a new methodology to be able to measure the spatial and temporal evolution of excitations on molecules. The spectrometer is able to measure these excitations with a spatial resolution at an atomic level, and a time resolution of 100 ns to 20 ms, which enables how these excitations change as a function of time. Understanding these molecular excitations are key to a wide variety of areas, such as photochemical synthesis, biological processes (e.g photosynthesis) and energy generation from sunlight.
