Online quality control and traceability for the food processing industry

Objective

In the food- and agricultural industry all over the world good quality control is vital. BSE, Salmonella and other contaminations cost the society billions of euro every year. In industrialised countries, the percentage of people suffering from foodborne diseases each year has been reported to apr. 30 percent. In the ever more rationalized food processing industry, you are still dependent on the human eyes and nose, or advanced laboratory equipment for contamination detection (no on-line measurement).

EU's new Food Law (from 2005) states that traceability from farm to fork must be implemented. There are urgent needs for quality control when packaging the food, to detect bacteria, mould and foreign objects. The problem however is the lack of simple and low cost online measurement systems for final quality control. The overall objective is to develop an online measuring and control system to fulfil EU's new Safe food policy. The objective is to avoid spreading of contaminated food stuff.
