HPV Pilot Action Indonesia

Ziel

HPV is the world's most common Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD). Every year 233.000 affected women ideas a result of progressive HPV related disease. Current data suggests that this is due to a lack or diminished immune response against high-risk HPV types.
Individuals who lack strong immunity may benefit from vaccination. In the world wide fight against HPV, a number of research centres are now developing(prophylactic) vaccines. LUMC and its EU-partners are one of the leading consortia. In this pilot action, Lucinda its counterparts in Indonesia (Jakarta and Bali) will run a clinical trial program in a study population of 200women to chart the percentage of individuals at risk for progressive HPV 16.
For this reason the incidence ofHPV16, as well as the immune response to this HPV type will be established. For this purpose the feasibility of simple, low cost DTH-skin test to detect HPV-immune reactivity will be tested. Once the DTH-skin test proves tube useful for detecting protective immune responses against HPV 16 it becomes within reach of other developing countries and will be helpful in the selection of individuals in need of specific vaccination. The test results will be cross-examined in Leiden (NL) with the results of a 'mirror-study' taking place at the sometime in Holland. Furthermore, the results of both studies (Leiden and Indonesia) will be implemented in forthcoming vaccination study against HIV’s this pilot action is to be incorporated in the running STD-education and prevention program of both local health centres, some basic education and training material on HPV will be developed for medical staff and target population.'
