FATIGUE BEHAVIOUR OF WELDED OFFSHORE STRUCTURES.

Cel

THE AIM OF THIS PROJECT IS TO PROMOTE THE USE OF HIGH STRENGTH STRUCTURAL STEELS FOR OFFSHORE USE, FOR WHICH PURPOSE A STEEL OF THE TYPE E460 HAS BEEN SELECTED.
IN ORDER TO MAKE OPTIMUM USE OF THESE STEELS WITH THEIR EXCELLENT MECHANICAL PROPERTIES IT IS NECESSARY TO DEVELOP IMPROVED WELDING METHODS AND TECHNIQUES FOR POST-WELD TREATMENT. IN THIS PROGRAMME A STUDY WILL BE MADE OF THE INFLUENCE OF THE IMPROVED WELDING PROCEDURE ALREADY DEVELOPED UNDER THE EARLIER PROGRAMME AND OF PRESTRESSING SHOT PEERING ON CRACK INITIATION AND THE VERY EARLY PROPAGATION OF CORROSION FATIGUE CRACKING IN WELDED T-JOINTS. MORE BASIC RESEARCH OF A COMPLEMENTARY NATURE CONCERNING THE FATIGUE BEHAVIOUR OF SHORT CRACKS WILL BE CARRIED OUT ON NOTCHED TEST PIECES SIMULATING STRESS CONCENTRATION IN WELD TOE REGIONS.

SOME FULL-SIZE TESTS ON TUBULAR NODES WILL PROVIDE A LINK BETWEEN THE RESEARCH ON SPECIMEN WELDS AND ACTUAL SERVICE CONDITIONS. THE WELDING AND POST-WELD TREATMENT TECHNIQUES WILL OF COURSE BE THE SAME AS THOSE USED ON THE SPECIMEN WELDS.



RESULTS:

THE RESULTS WILL HELP TOWARDS AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE POTENTIAL ADVANTAGES OF USING HIGH-STRENGTH STRUCTURAL STEELS FOR OFFSHORE WELDED STRUCTURES.
