Workshop on MAX phases for harsh environments (öffnet in neuem Fenster)

This Workshop will convey all aspects in the processing of MAX phases, with special attention on application-driven chemical & microstructural optimisation. Also emphasis will be put on the relation between MAX phase composition (including solid solutions) & microstructure with in-service mechanical performance. Setting the scene for the development of MAX phase-based material designed for harsh environments (irradiation, corrosive media, high temperatures & pressures) will primarily be based on the state-of-the-art know-how on bulk MAX phase materials, extrapolating in the field of applications requiring the deposition of coatings to ensure the protection of a substrate. This Workshop will be organised at UP (long-standing experience in MAX phase production & characterisation) and lectures will be given by top MAX phase experts in the Consortium (DU, KU Leuven, SCK•CEN, ICL, UCAM, UoM, UoH, UP, RWTH) and industries (SHT).

Workshop on multiscale modelling (öffnet in neuem Fenster)

This Workshop will introduce the students to the principles of multiscale modelling and simulation techniques needed to predict in-service material behaviour and better understand material degradation mechanisms. The Workshop will include lectures based on the project modelling approaches (BCA, KMC, first principle calculations, molecular dynamics, FEM) as well as hands-on computer/simulation exercises. This one week-long Workshop will be organised at KU Leuven as an activity of the ATHENS (Advanced Technology Higher Education Network) network, which is made of 15 leading European technological Universities with KU Leuven being one of them. The ATHENS network (http://athensnetwork.eu) organises intensive short-duration specialization courses during pre-defined periods of the academic year (November and March) at each member institution. The so-called ATHENS week was established with the support of the EC SOCRATES programme receiving an annual subsidy of 50000 € between 1997 and 2001. Today, the Programme is mainly funded by contributions of the member institutions. The ATHENS programme facilitates the exchange of students between European technological institutions, usually motivating students to continue their studies at a higher level; each session includes 30 hours of scientific courses and 10-15 hours of 'European Dimension' cultural activities, and is equivalent to 23-ECTS credits. The Workshop lecturers will include top experts from the Consortium (UOXF, UCAM, RWTH, SCK•CEN, KTH, GTT, ICL).

Autumn School on ATF development (öffnet in neuem Fenster)

The IL TROVATORE Autumn School, which took place in October 2022, was dedicated to the project core objective, i.e., the development of ATF claddings and their joints. Special attention was paid to joining the ATF cladding tubes, an aspect that was not specifically addressed in any other Workshop. The Autumn School was organised at POLITO (long-standing expertise in the joining of SiC/SiC claddings) and the lectures addressed all aspects of ATF cladding material development (all bulk, coated & surface-modified concepts; joining; interaction with both coolant and standard LWR fuels; ion/proton/neutron irradiation & PIE; predictive modelling activities).

Workshop on surface engineering technologies (öffnet in neuem Fenster)

This Workshop will cover aspects of the surface engineering technologies (coatings & surface modification) used in the project, providing a basic background on thin film physics. The specific characteristics and limitations of the coating technologies (magnetron sputtering, cathodic arc deposition, cold spraying, pulsed laser deposition) and the GESA surface modification process considered in IL TROVATORE will be addressed, including state-of-the-art interface engineering approaches for particular systems. This Workshop will be organised at KIT (GESA process development and upscaling to 1 m-long tubes) and lectures will be given by top experts in the field of thin film and surface engineering technologies (RWTH, LiU, HSU, IIT, KIT) and industries (PLANSEE, HAUZER).

Workshop on AMD of nuclear materials (öffnet in neuem Fenster)

IL TROVATORE will try to establish an approach for accelerated material development (AMD) to the benefit of the highly conservative nuclear sector. If successful, this approach is expected to shorten significantly the money and time invested in the development of new nuclear materials needed in both current (e.g., ATF clads for Gen-II/III LWRs) and future (Gen-IV, fusion) generation nuclear systems. The success of an AMD approach relies on the development of high-throughput tools for the screening of innovative nuclear materials (e.g., the use of ion/proton irradiation to reproduce neutron-induced defect microstructures in the considered material candidates) and the effective interconnectivity of material design, material performance and material performance assessment (see Fig. 8). This Workshop will address the great challenges in establishing an AMD approach for nuclear materials and will be organised by UoH, most probably as a fully virtual event. The Workshop organisation will very likely happen in conjunction with already established educational programmes on nuclear materials, such as the BNEN (Belgian Nuclear higher Education Network) master-after-master programme in nuclear engineering. The BNEN interuniversity programme in nuclear engineering is organised by a consortium of six Belgian Universities (KU Leuven, Universiteit Gent, Université de Liège, Université Catholique de Louvain, Vrije Universiteit Brussel) and SCK•CEN. The possible organisation of this Workshop in conjunction with the BNEN programme, for example, is in alignment with the primary objective of the latter 'to educate young engineers in nuclear engineering and its applications and to develop and maintain high-level nuclear competences in Belgium and abroad' (http://bnen.sckcen.be). Lectures will be given by many experts from the IL TROVATORE Consortium (UoH, UoM, SCK•CEN, NNL, CEA, etc.).

The DMP will evolve during the project, until a mature data management policy is established during the project lifetime.
