Hydrogen Energy Applications for Valley Environments in Northern Netherlands

Periodic Reporting for period 3 - HEAVENN (Hydrogen Energy Applications for Valley Environments in Northern Netherlands)

Berichtszeitraum: 2022-01-01 bis 2022-12-31

HEAVENN is a large-scale demo project addressing the requirements of the call, by bringing together core elements: production, distribution, storage and local end-use of H2 into a fully-integrated and functioning “H2 valley” (H2V), that can serve as a blueprint for replication across Europe and beyond. The main goal is to make use of green hydrogen across the entire value chain, while developing replicable business models for wide-scale commercial deployment of H2 across the entire regional energy system.
Cluster I
- Two H2 pipelines under development in Delfzijl. The first will connect the Delta to the existing infrastructure. The second will connect the (to be built) 20 MW DJEWELS 1 electrolyser to the BioMCN factory and will be prepared for third party connections and extensions for other offtakers. Pipeline material developed in the project is reinforced thermoplastic reducing costs for H2 infrastructure.
Completed tasks in 2022:
• Several talks with potential users of the H2 infrastructure.
• Matchmaking event
• Coordination meetings with Hynetwork Services to address issues regarding the H2 transport system.

- Trailer fill facility: location confirmed, safety study conducted, implementation of necessary modifications to the NOU process and pipeline infrastructure started, initial concept design and engineering of the site concluded, discussions on the collaboration between partners on H2 supply-transport-use chain are ongoing. H2 Hub will take its FID in Q3 of 2023.
- H2 ship HRS: ship will be fueled by container swap system, not through a HRS. This task will be modified in the Grant Agreement.
- FCH Dockside power: equipment specified and heating, cooling and provisional H2 requirements provided. Dependent on needs of the ship.
- H2 Salt barge: design and build contract was signed. Long-term contract for deployment of H2 powered vessel for internal transport of salt on Delfzijl – Rotterdam route was concluded. Design of the ship and configuration of H2-electric propulsion initiated, including a Fluid Dynamics calculation to determine required installed capacity and hull shape. Ship was ordered and built and transported, will start sailing in Q3 2023.

Cluster II
- Salt cavern: GAS successfully conducted first static tests and demonstrated H2 can be safely stored in salt caverns. Connections specification study completed, covering various options, considering different market situations/developments, and scalability of design, resulting in a plot plan and capacity range definition. Design and site lay-out for next H2 caverns in progress.
- Technical design of H2 distribution system completed. Quantitative risk analysis, market orientation and zoning plan were prepared. In 2022, further work was done on the research, design and preparation of the permit for entire H2 chain.
- FC-based power system at data centre: integration of the FC unit has been designed. Detailed design will follow. For necessary permits consultations took place with Groningen Municipality and Veiligheidsregio Groningen. Discussion with supplier H2Tec on what kind of system to use here. Once a system is chosen and accepted and delivered in the Netherlands it could be installed quickly.
- Hoogeveen: building of the newly built houses has started. All permits and contract in place.

Cluster III
- In 2020 it was decided to implement an at least 4MW Electrolyser (iso 2MW). Offtake is difficult. Shell looks into building an R&I electrolyser.
- H2 pipeline between GETEC and GZI: commitment was reached to implement the H2 pipeline alongside the already planned H-cal natural gas pipeline, minimizing social impact and costs. After a comparison of the pros and cons of thermoplastic and steel, steel was selected as the material for this pipeline. Pipeline is installed but not yet operational.
- Detail design, site layout, and permit application for HRS completed. Launching customer secured. Electrolyser built and delivered June 2022. Used by Qbuzz buses and heavy duty vehicles.
- H2 for steam generation at GETEC: infrastructure study completed, burner conversion study completed, procurement of subcontracters in preparation. Combustion system of gas turbine modified to process 18 volumes % H2. Currently waiting for H2 supply.

Cluster IV
- Procurement of trucks and vans underway.
- Procurement of H2 taxis 80% completed, 100% will be reached before 2024.
- 1 of 100 H2 passenger vehicles procured.
- Location development for the HRSes ongoing. One location is agreed upon: Groningen Airport Eelde will receive one landside HRS.

WP5
-With the objective of establishing the market framework and developing regional business models adapted to the Northern Netherlands, studies considering the economic conditions, for wide-scale commercialization of green H2 and for optimum operation of an integrated H2 Valley in the Northern Netherlands, have been developed.
- Development of business models continued with further definition of methodology and specific business cases, based on feedback from techno-economic assessments. During this reporting period ENER has focused their work on literature research, and data gathering from partners through the coordinated work with RUG for the relevant end use applications and other key elements in the Green Hydrogen supply chain in order to determine the main assumptions for the business models for the different applications in the project, to be validated with partners during the integrated business model work.
- General methodology for development of environmental and socioeconomic impact analysis of the project was established and scope and potential cut-off criteria for analyses were preliminarily determined.
-The preliminary study has been carried out including the Social Life Cycle Assessment methodology study. A dedicated data base including social indicators has been acquired by FHa.
- Work on EU replication has started based on previous information and experiences from projects like BIGHIT and the H2Territories Platform (HTP). Intensive literature research completed to find a new approach, resulting in Agent-Based Modelling as the methodology where next HTP Tool will be founded.

WP6
- Elaborate study on the scale-up possibilities of H2 production from 100MW to 2GW at ENGIE Eemshaven site was delivered and disseminated.
- Assessments done about feasibility of positioning a 20-50MW electrolyser at GZI Next Emmen plot: resulting H2 costs are not attractive for industrial offtake.
- Gasunie conducted studies interconnecting H2 infrastructure. Appr. 90% of the existing NG grid can be retrofitted for H2.
- Study underway into potential use of salt caverns for large scale H2 storage.
- Study delivered on potential of Liquid H2 in Eemshaven/Delfzijl.
- Market export study delivered and focussed on neighbouring regions in Germany, the Netherlands and UK. Consideration is being given to potential to import and export H2 from Eemshaven/Delfzijl cluster beyond these immediately regional markets.
- Three H2 mobility studies completed: focused on maritime transport, railway transport, and road trucks.
- Roadmap towards 2050 under development.
As the activities have not reached the deployment phase yet, we cannot yet demonstrate progress beyond the state of the art. Once the applications are in operation and we have collected data on the operation, we can begin to assess that.
