Project description
Setting sail for eco-friendlier maritime transport
A whopping 90 % of goods being shipped around the world today are transported by sea. However, big ships are bad for the environment. They are responsible for high levels of CO2 emissions. According to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), emissions generated by ships could jump to 250 % by 2050. To reverse this trend, IMO and the EU issued strict rules to control fuel consumption and emissions in the maritime transport industry. The EU-funded SuPREmE project is a web platform that offers actionable insights for reducing emissions and increasing fuel effectiveness. It is based on big data simulation technology that integrates weather, tidal and satellite data to provide precise individualised actionable insights.
Objective
Today, 90% of all transported goods in the world are transported by sea, enabling a huge volume of trade between European nations and the rest of the world. The 15 largest ships in the world emit as much nitrogen oxide and Sulphur oxide as the world’s 760 million cars. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) estimates that carbon dioxide emissions from shipping were equal to 2.2% of the global emissions in 2012 and expects them to rise 50 to 250 percent by 2050 if no action is taken. European carbon emission monitoring scheme (EU-MRV) & International Maritime Organization – Document Collection System (IMO-DCS) have stringent guideline on daily monitoring of fuel usage and emissions by all sea faring ships. We4Sea has developed SuPREmE a web-based ship performance monitoring platform that provides actionable insights on how to increase fuel efficiency and reduce emissions with no additional hardware installation in the ship. SuPREmE is the easiest, only non-CAPEX monitoring solution of ships, making fuel efficiency and emission reduction easy, fast, affordable and certified for EU-MRV and IMO DCS regulations. SuPREmE is also the only platform that uses big-data based simulation technology to integrate Weather data, Tidal Data and Satellite data in addition to daily captain reports to derive accurate and actionable insights on performance of individual components of ships. During the innovation project, We4Sea will enhance the performance of SuPREmE by improving ability to give insights based on the analysis of data collected, automate data collection from third parties for weather, tidal and satellite data. SuPREmE platform will also be scaled up to handle 10x more ships than the current capacity of 250 ships and will demonstrate financial and non-financial impact by working with 14 ships of Royal Bodewes, A2B-Online and Transpetrol for 6 months

Net EU financial contribution. The sum of money that the participant receives, deducted by the EU contribution to its linked third party. It considers the distribution of the EU financial contribution between direct beneficiaries of the project and other types of participants, like third-party participants.
