Review of experiments for MHD systems (öffnet in neuem Fenster)

This report will summarize details of past experiments for magnetic shielding and radio blackout mitigation performed by different groups worldwide and, in most cases, involving permanent magnets or normal conducting coils to generate magnetic fields. The potential for improvements, particularly by using superconducting magnets to provide higher magnetic fields will be shown, as well as different requirements for ground and flight experiments.

Review of modelling for MHD-enabled systems (öffnet in neuem Fenster)

This report will review the critical aspects and shortcomings of state-of-art computational tools for plasma flows including MHD effects, with particular focus on thermochemical nonequilibrium models (needed for an accurate prediction of electron densities and electrical conductivities) and on the treatment of flow-electromagnetic field interactions. The most representative (re-)entry plasma codes will be analysed.

Heat flux experiments w/o magnet report (öffnet in neuem Fenster)

A report will discuss a set of heat flux experiments conducted in high-enthalpy air flows, utilizing well-qualified and commonly deployed heat flux probe designs available at IRS. Experimental data will be made available on a public repository.

This report will review MHD-enabling technologies, including the current state-of-the-art in HTS materials and products (e.g. tapes, coils and stacks for the manufacture of electromagnets), cryogenic cooling materials and technologies (e.g. cooling circuits, cryopumps, turbo Brayton cycle, circulation systems, insulation materials, other associated subsystems), ablative and hybrid thermal protection systems (TPS), ceramic matrix composites (CMC) and active cooling systems.

Verification results of the extended ray tracing algorithm for radio brownout and blackout prediction in air/CO2 plasma.
