European opera centre

Obiettivo

There is powerful evidence that, in the field of opera, superior training is offered outside Europe with the result that talented European citizens are being disadvantaged in employment. The European Opera Centre is being established to respond to this need. Its work is intended to provide a structured route into employment. Training, which is designed to complement those courses already available in Europe, will be through participation in a company presenting fully staged opera performances across Europe and will be available to singers, conductors, repetitieurs, technicians, producers, designers and arts administrators. This opportunity for practical experience at a professional level will last for eight months each year and will be open to citizens of all member states of the European Union and of participating countries. Selection will be through audition or competitive interview and will be made entirely on merit.

Funding through the Leonardo programme will assist specifically in drawing up the detailed programme for the first year of training (1997/98), in providing training during this first year of operation and in assessing and reviewing the results. Opportunities to utilise new technology, including CD-Rom, and to assist in the dissemination of the Centre's work will be thoroughly investigated.

Impact
As well as ensuring that training is fully attuned to the needs of the profession, the project will provide a structured route into employment It will also give the citizens of Europe an insight into this art-form which many have not experienced to date, and increase understanding and enjoyment through live performances and broadcasting and recording.
